Paris - Day 3

Today we visited the famous art district and mountain town of Montmartre.

The famous Moulin Rouge.

Van Gogh's former home.
It was renovated after he lived here b/c Van Gogh did not become a famous artist until after his death.

This area is where famous artists (including Picasso) rented studios to pursue their artistry.  This is where they would gather to drink, read/write poetry, share their works, and discuss ideas.
If you want to read more about it and the artists who hung out here click here.

Moulin Radet - the two windmills in this area are from the 17th century and were used to grind grapes, wheat, and stones (like a quarry).  Artists like Renoir were inspired by these windmills.

This is the local watering hole and caberet where struggling artists and writers, including Picasso, ModiglianiApollinaire, and Utrillo would often discuss the "meaning of art".  Steve Martin wrote a play based on this caberet.

The only vineyard found in Paris

This is where Renoir completed his famous painting Bal du moulin de la Galette.  It's housed in this museum.

The Sacre Coeur Basilica.  The highest point in Paris.

Today is our last day in Paris and we are sad to leave... but we are also excited about heading to Rome!
